Award Time, Coaches' Favorite?
Does the coaches' favorite always get the award?
So I was coaching at Wahoos last night and Coach Chris shows me a few names that he was thinking of giving awards. All great kids. Every year/season Jersey Wahoos gives out three types of awards at the team banquet. One category is reserved for the top swimmer in each age group. It is usually the swimmer with the most top times on the "Who's Number One" lists included in the yearbook. Also, the coaches are able to give out three awards in two of the other categories, most improved and special coaches'. Most improved is pretty self-explanatory. Special coaches' award to me is an open door to promote my philosophy and values.
Hard work and dedication to the sport is at the heart of my beliefs. Does this mean that attendance needs to be one-hundred percent? No, but a swimmer must be coming to practice more than a on regular basis and showing more than average effort and attention to detail. This is the only way good habits can be ingrained into a swimmer's performance.
So in a way, the swimmer/athlete that displays the qualities which a coach holds dear are the same qualities which make a swimmer better. Thus lead to positive connections with coach and that swimmer becoming a favorite.
